Almost from the start
of collecting souvenir material in May 1987
I kept notes in manuscript of the
material as I acquired it, but soon making
this a word-processed record in list form
instead. In the period December 1992 to
July 1994, having experimented with a scheme
of classification, the list was wholly on
disc in a state I felt satisfactory for
an eventual catalogue. Several schemes of
layout from these listed holdings followed,
were tried and discarded. By November 1997,
having now Microsoft’s Windows 95 and the
Access database program, I transferred the
word-processed list to database, the more
sensible way of maintaining a record needing
constant updating. During the transfer I
decided on a final, expanded classification
system that permitted each item to have
a catalogue number, but also made use of
the refined sorting possible with a database.
I also split away Postal Souvenirs from
Philatelic Souvenirs entirely. My interest
had always been much more inclined towards
Philatelic Souvenirs, but I was seeing attractive
items in the cognate Postal field that I
bought and felt should be recorded. The
intention had been to compile a second database
for Postal Souvenirs, but this was never
realised and the list I kept remains as
the word-processed checklist transcribed
here. The word “checklist” is chosen deliberately:
it simply records my holdings at the
time I retired and sold the collection.
Unlike the philatelic database, I had not
made the systematic search of the literature
needed to complete the work. I regard it,
therefore, as a foundation that a future
collector may find of use. J.N.
