The Rawdon, Wright and Hatch firm's experience in engraving and printing the New York provisional earned them the contract - without competition - or the first General Issue in 1847. Perhaps the most significant aspect of the New York provisional is how its success demonstrated the efficacy of adhesive postage stamps to the public and to Congress, paving the way for the 5c and 10c General Issue.

In 1858, they joined with eight other printers to form American Bank Note Company. The 1847 U.S. 5-cent and 10-cent stamps were originally engraved on steel plates by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson of New York City, a firm known for its engravings of banknotes.

Sennett Security Products, LLC, a security printing solutions provider, manufactures postage stamps, checks, authentication labels, national identity documents, and stocks and bonds. It also offers color lithographic, planning or layout of graphic production, typesetting, digital, letterpress or screen, promotional or advertising, publication, stationery or business form, security or financial instruments, and textile printing services; and wrap, tag, label, seal, and bag printing services. Sennett Security Products, LLC was founded in 1998 and is based in Chantilly, Virginia. The company has manufacturing facilities in Virginia and North Carolina.

Since 1978 when the USPS issued its first Request for Proposal for private sector printing of United States postage stamps, Sennett has been involved with the implementation of the United States Postal Services' alternative-source stamp manufacturing programme. Stamps by Sennett have a cylinder prefix of 'S' for easy identification by USPS
