IRELAND
First postage stamp issued: 1922.
Irish
Free State Essays - At the time of the 1922 creation
of the Irish Republic, there was a stamp
design competition. Dollard Printing
House Limited, Hely Limited, Perkins Bacon
& Co., O'Loughlin, Murphy &
Boland and the Pictorial Printing Machine
Company each produced essays for consideration,
as did some other unrecorded organisations.
At least a dozen designs exist in many different
colours. Many are available to collectors,
although not all are commercially available.
The Government Printers, who were based
in Dublin Castle, eventually produced the
first set of definitive stamps for this
fledgling State. These stamps were in use
from 1922 to 1937.

A
strike at the
Israel Government
Printers in 1998 caused a shortage
of postage stamps. Glilon was commissioned
to produce some interim stamps to a very
basic format, using self-adhesive paper.
Stamps
were separately affixed to plain backing
paper, according to a report in the British
Stamp Magazine for April 1999. A somewhat
laborious means of production if the report
is accurate, which is unlikely based on
the company specialising in all aspects
of adhesive label production.

on their appearance in bibliographies contained
on the Internet, they appear to be primarily
book publishers/printers.
In
1946, Frank A Read ARPS was appointed to
print stamps for the new government of the
State of Israel. He openly admits to having
had no former knowledge of this method of
security printing and that there was no
step-and-repeat camera available. This proved
to be a steep learning curve for everyone
at Lewin-Epstein - especially as they were
undertaking their work in wartime conditions,
with most staff having been called-up for
the army.
Lewin-Epstein
have been responsible for the lithographically
printed stamps of Israel.
